Forty-five minutes later, Ashlyn slid behind the wheel of her white Audi coupe. She wondered what Lance drove. Probably something tasteful.

The Loft was a low-key establishment about ten minutes from her office high-rise. It was typically populated by young professionals looking to make connections rather than hookups. Ashlyn preferred that crowd to the heavy drinking bar crowd farther south near the university.

Lance had a quiet table for two in a private corner waiting for them when she arrived. “I ordered you a vodka tonic,” he informed her, pulling out her chair. “You usually go for Chardonnay, but I thought tonight you could use something a bit stronger.”

Ashlyn had to physically force her jaw closed to keep it from falling open in surprise. Still, he was right. A stiffer drink could do her well.

“You looked great today,” he complimented her before their drinks arrived. “And I don’t just mean how great you look in that suit, Ashlyn.”

The waitress appeared with two vodka tonics, Ashlyn’s over crushed ice with a twist of lime. She was impressed, though she didn’t say so.

“Thank you, Lance. We work well together.” She hesitated, feeling slightly foolish. She was always so in control. Why couldn’t she ever find her words around Lance?

“Listen.” She put her drink down on the table. “I just want to thank you. For everything.”

Lance leaned subtly forward in his chair, his eyes never leaving hers, almost in a challenge. “For what?

“For seeing the worst side of me, the side I never show anyone. Despite all of that, you managed to help me pick myself back up.”

Lance took a sip of his drink, his brown eyes doing that mischievous thing that had driven Ashlyn wild since the day he started working for her. "Isn't it nice to let someone else take control once in a while?" he asked.

It was. It really was very nice. He’d hit her very core, the place where she felt most insecure—her need to always be in control. Relinquishing that control, even for a moment, made her feel so vulnerable.

“Yes,” she said, her usually firm voice softening, her eyes turned toward her drink. “I’ve always needed control. Ever since I was a kid. Always bossing my older sister around, never letting other kids touch my toys. Group projects, now those were a nightmare.” She laughed. “It’s just...I guess it’s just in my blood.”

Lance placed a finger under her chin, just as he’d done earlier that day, tilting her face up until their eyes met. His gaze was serene. She’d never known such calm strength before, not from anyone.

She could give herself over completely to a gaze like that.

“I…” She paused, breaking eye contact. “I think I’d better have another.”

A smile crept to the side of Lance’s lips, but he seemed to be hiding it fairly well. Did he enjoy making her uncomfortable?

The waitress brought them two more rounds, and soon they were sitting very close together, their warm breath mixing as they laughed together—mostly over Doug Cherry’s hideous tie and the forbidden politics of the office.
